Berlin’s drinking water system is unique in Europe. Entirely reliant on groundwater, it serves 3.8 million people via an intricate natural filtration process. However, this vital resource is under increasing pressure due to climate change, the rising risk of drought and the planned closure of a coal mine that feeds the Spree River. The city is now preparing for long-term sustainability through the ambitious ‘Masterplan Water’, supported by the European project IMPETUS, which uses advanced climate modelling and water treatment innovations such as ozonation. Find out how Berlin is preparing for a future of water scarcity and how other cities can learn from its efforts.
The IMPETUS project runs untill the end of 2025.
