The prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is increasing rapidly, particularly among young people, while many patients struggle to respond to existing treatments. The EU-funded Algae4IBD project has brought together leading researchers to explore the potential of algae as a natural source of bioactive compounds that could help to reduce inflammation, support gut health and improve patients’ quality of life. After screening over 1,000 algae strains, the team identified some promising extracts and tested them on inflamed human cells, biopsies from patients, and bacterial cultures. The most effective compounds were incorporated into functional foods, including biscuits and yoghurt. These products are not intended to to complement medical treatment by supporting immunity, microbiome balance, and antioxidant protection.
The Algae4IBD project is running from 2021 till the beginning of 2026.
