Wetlands, which cover just 6% of the Earth’s surface, support 40% of the world’s wildlife and act as critical carbon sinks, but they are under threat from agriculture, particularly in Spain’s Ebro (Ebre) Delta. Here, rice farming relies on extensive irrigation, with run-off affecting coastal ecosystems. While freshwater benefits aquaculture, pesticides and herbicides pose risks to biodiversity. The IMPETUS project is testing nature-based filtration systems using biochar, sand and rice husks to remove pollutants before they reach the sea. Early results show up to 60% reduction in pollutants, providing a sustainable model for wetlands and agriculture worldwide.
The EU-funded IMPETUS project started in October 2021 and runs until September 2025.
