Severe flooding in May 2024 devastated parts of the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium, highlighting the urgent need for climate adaptation. Faced with rising sea levels and more intense storms, Dutch cities like Rotterdam are rethinking urban planning – integrating floating homes, smarter flood defences, and innovative tools like a decision support system to predict and manage risk. As politicians and engineers race to future-proof their cities, the Netherlands is becoming a global model for flood resilience. Can these innovations keep the country above water?
The decision support system was developed as part of the EU-funded IMPETUS project, which started in October 2021 and runs until September 2025.
